Carbon

The science and technology of carbon materials are in the process of continuous development and are constantly finding ways to improve the properties of the already existing materials even at the nanometric scale. The wide variety of materials now available has turned the field of carbon materials into a multi- and interdisciplinary science.

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have huge potential in the application of biology, medicine, electronics, energy technologies and drug delivery. Many of the allotropes of carbon materials have shown promising results in renewable energy resource and also in energy storage application. The application of CNMs as an electron field emitter used for flat screen displays for computers and other devices. Carbon-nanotubes (CNT) and graphene exhibit extraordinary mechanical strength and electrical conductivity with remarkable physical and chemical properties, which are perfectly suited for applications such as catalysis, biosensors, fuel cells, batteries and electronic devices. Carbon dots (CD’s) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), due to their attractive properties like chemical inertness, tunable photoluminescence, non-toxicity and excellent bio-compatibility, are applicable in areas like photovoltaics, optical sensing, bio-imaging, drug delivery.

Research scientists and engineers are currently working relentlessly to achieve the imitable electrical, mechanical and thermal properties of various carbon materials for potential applications. The important areas are synthesis, characterization and applications of CNMs. Recent advancement in the production of various advanced carbon materials from different types of coal (lignite, bituminous and anthracite), charcoal, residue of the crude oil refinery as cheap raw materials have shown a promising direction and avenues in the mass production of high-quality carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Replacing the existing high-cost carbon feedstock by abundant and low-priced carbon feedstock will be of significant benefit for sustainable energy generation, storage, environmental remediation, sensing and bio-imaging application.

Thus, considering the applications of CNMs in various disciplines of science and engineering and technological field, GSES is ready to take up any R & D work pertaining to “Carbon Nanomaterials and its Applications”.
